Thing about that is that hospitals are often short of blood, so they could end up killing people that way, just less directly. [Granted, at other times there's a surplus of blood, and in that instance stuff is dumped after a predetermined date regardless of whether it's actually off, but they wouldn't be able to count on that as a supply.]

Plus, when you actually consider how much blood someone would need to live on, given the energy requirements of your average human... the odd pint wouldn't go far. They'd need a LOT to actually live on - "multiple people's entire blood supply a day" much.

Except for eeries verse vampires blood is more a semi-necessary supplement than a mainstay of their diet so they don't need enough to "live on." Nina shows they can even live without blood, they are just a lot weaker if they do.

Also if vampires needed blood to live, that would be no different ethically than humans that need blood to live, except humans need that blood occasionally. They'd be like sick-for-life humans in that regard. Assuming there are not that many vampires, humankind should not have much trouble supplying vampires with enough blood to survive, we'd need maybe higher payments for blood donations, and vampires with their superhuman strength and other abilities could have easily find ways to pay humans back by doing stuff impossible for humans to do.
