Because the Layla of the present has less than twenty years of memories and life experience, and the Unholy Queen has centuries' worth.
Layla as we know her is drowning and being absorbed in the ocean that is the Unholy Queen. She needs to be pulled out, and for the Unholy Queen to be sent packing for good.

Normally memories don't work like that though, your more recent memories should be a lot clearer than your distant past ones. That is why I wonder if something more is going on.

To a first approximation, our memories are who we are. And we might not remember twenty years ago very well, but it laid the foundations for who we are now.
And Layla is getting a thousand years of added memories. However non-specific they are, that's a sh**load of patterns of thought and engrained habits. Actually, it's literally unimaginable for any of us, or for the writers - but what we're seeing is probably as good a guess as any as to how this would go.

There's another symptom beginning to show up...Layla is starting to not use contractions. There's only one - "I'm" - at the beginning of the strip...and that's all.

Never figured that out. Who actually doesn't use contractions in informal spoken speech, except for emphasis? It's not anal; it's just silly. (Or in the case of early Sluggy Freelance, bad typesetting.)

At this point, Nina might as well start the process of grieving. Layla is essentially dead.sun tzu wrote:Um, wow. That was... nasty. Poor Nina. (Heck, poor Layla - it looks more and more like she got overwritten.)
Early to rise and early to bed makes a man healthy and wealthy but socially dead.

Not so easy. The mind may be gone, but the body is still there and perfectly fine, standing, moving, talking, dating...

Some people have problems using contractions, and some just learn more formal speech and don't know when to be informal.Storm-forge mystique wrote:Never figured that out.
