I don't think his mind is completely on Brooke here, because if it was Ace probably wouldn't be getting all hot and bothered by Nina's close contact.

Indeed. I guess Ace never really thought about Nina in "that way", but now he's pretty much forced to do so. He might have an epiphany. Danger is, I'm not sure Nina really knows what is "that way" and understands the implications. In fact, I fear she will have a bad reaction.

Ace is headed for a bad place. Likely a panicked Nina and a furious Layla.

What puzzles me is that most people seem to assume that, of Ace and Nina, only Nina needs to mature. Yet Ace is acting extremely immature in this strip.

As in...? 'cuz he hasn't done anything I'd consider immature, yet. :-\

So far, he's assumed Brooke found out about his date with Nina and is trying to get back at him at him, which isn't unfounded 'cuz that's exactly what she's done before. So all he's really done is draw on his past experience with her and he's decided he's not gonna fall for it "this time".

Ace doesn't think it's coincidental that he's run into Brooke, because he figures she's too smart for that to be the case. In short, he's thinking his way through this and trying to make sense of what he's seeing. Which we've also seen him do, in the past.

Sure, his logic is flawed because he doesn't know the truth of the matter, but immature people usually don't stop to think. They tend to act instead, based purely on impulse, or whatever they're feeling at the time. Ace hasn't done that yet, 'cuz he's still trying to work things out in his head. Sorta.

But Ace's is age-appropriate immaturity.

Rereading this strip and thinking of relationships in EC makes me reckon that relationships here are not very passionate. Weirdly, the charactet who displays the strongest feelings may be Nina for Ace, even if it's kind of childish. Though childish love seems the stronger one also in Mà3 (hello Yuki).
I dunno, they're all "Sure why not" in their relationships rather than "I'm really into you" (no pun intended). Not very sentimental nor romantic. :-??

It's kinda sad when you think of it. Some disillusion about love from the authors ?

That's a good observation. I don't think it's anything consciously intentional from the writers, though. More likely it's just not their style* writing those star-crossed/always-meant-to-be romantic relationships that are mostly prevalent in fiction, and prefer the (more realistic as well, especially for teenagers) temporary hook-ups path.

*and it's actually fiendishly difficult to write a good (aka, believable and sentimentally satisfying) "true love" story, most such attempts end in Twilight-like fiascos, lol.

Come again? And, if you have the print editions, I'd also redirect you to the bonus story of vol.1, which shows you how they hooked up and their first date.

They had feelings for each other, 'cuz a girl doesn't get this upset over someone she doesn't care about, nor would Ace have been as distressed about Brooke running off with Ash, which is another form of passion, btw.

It wasn't a case of sure why not, they wanted to know if what they had was real.

When two people are serious about each other, they're gonna want those kinds of assurances. That's why Brooke mentioned couple's counselling, but said that was for old people. They were both 14 and both in their first real relationship. While that realization showed maturity for their age, it also showed that there was a great deal they still didn't know regarding their feelings for each other and how relationships work. That's normal.

There are Kade and Layla. They get distracted and consequently are not confident enough, but other than that... :D
There's also Jacqui. She's most certainly "♥ really into! ♥". :))

Things will work out in the end... eventually.

After all, Nina's crush on Ace has usually gone unrequited, Ace has had an on/off relationship with Brooke for almost as long as Nina's been crushing after him, while Brooke's steadfastly not committing herself.

Ace will probably try to remain outwardly stoic (while inwardly fuming - that's the kind of rise he's currently feeling rather than passion) and allow Nina to cuddle up to him. Meanwhile, at some point Brooke might notice she's got a little spectator - it's not inconceivable that she'll threaten him loudly, whereupon Nina jumps up to his rescue (although I still don't get what she sees in him, unless by magic, intuition or whatever she feels an overwhelming desire to protect him).

He's HERS and that's all she needs ! :D
Did he ever steal her panties, though ?

I guess Blair is family to her. Even if he's unpleasant, troublemaker, useless and annoying, he's still family.

All of these Ace accusations are silly.

As Gotoh said above, there has been enough previous experiences for his thoughts (which he is not expressing, merely trying to puzzle) to be somewhat rationale.

Also, that lynx girl quite literally is doing exactly what Ace thinks is being done and took the time to look right at him. (The fact that she is too scatterbrained to realize what she's doing and that she isn't necessarily 'intentionally' targeting Ace is immaterial.)

Well, obviously. But, the rule that only crazy paranoics think anyone wants to pull a fast one on them applies to the cases when someone does. In the Real Life (TM), it usually applies to such cases even louder. ;))
