He probably got pants'ed regularly, so boxers were probably the only feasible way to combat that without getting gawked at, snickered at, and in general all around laughed at. If that ever happened to me, once I pulled up my pants I likely would have roundhoused the jerk that did it. And then kept kicking them while they were down.
