You know, Mel is probably doomed here, given how good the MMAA, er... Tiff is about keeping secrets relating to identity.

Maybe not. Who else would grill Tiff on it other than faith (who's probably about to wake up) and school administration, who probably already know something.

And why are you talking about the MMAA and Tiff together? Are you saying they're connected somehow?
Pointless arguing is one of the three pillars upon which the Internet is built. The other two are of course cat pictures and porn.

I'd actually suggest the book instead. For example, the Wicked Witch of the West had the golden cap which allowed her to command the winged monkeys up to three times. The first time was to conquer the Winkie Country, the second was to defeat the Great Oz, and the third was to capture Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion.

Stonefoot wrote:even if the witch of the west is an absolute dictator of some sort, how does that invalidate her claim to her late sister's effects? or her right to seek justice against the assassin for that matter?

According to the original novel, there was no familial relationship between the two Wicked Witches. The WWW wanted the silver shoes (they were made into ruby slippers in the movie because they would show up better) to increase her power, and never even started harassing Dorothy until after she visited the Emerald City.

'J' wrote:given that she has basically decapitated the governments of two major nations in the region (assuming the witch of the east wasn't ruling her own lands as well), is that really a surprise?

The Tin Woodsman was made the ruler of Winkie Country by popular acclaim. The troubles that plague Oz in the second book (in which Dorothy is noticeably absent) are not related to the deaths of the two Wicked Witches.

(partly ninja'd by jaimehlers (who added a lot of useful evidence from the books), but, anyway:)

Oh, gee, I don't know. Maybe enslaving the entire population of the country she ruled?

admittedly, it's been awhile since i've seen it, but would you mind explaining when in the movie that happens?

Well, that isn't shown explicitly, but in each case the witch is killed accidentally, Dorothy's immediate reaction is roughly "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! It was an accident!", and the entire local population celebrate her as the hero who has freed them from the witch. I consider that to be sufficient evidence.

(J said that, not me. I agree with your answer.)

so you're saying that being angry that someone killed her sister (accidentally or not) is evidence of being a dictator. and then by extension, anyone who wasn't a dictator would have been cool if they'd walked in on a bunch of people partying over the still warm corpse of their sibling.

edit: just reread that. so you're saying that the witch of the east was an evil oppressor. that's fine, but it still doesn't explain what makes the witch of the west wicked.

Where in the world did you get that? I did not say anything remotely like that (and neither did jaimehlers, if you were referring to him or her).

As for the rest, I'd suggest reading my post again. The answers are there.

J, apparently my arguments make no sense to you, and yours make no sense to me. The Wicked Witch of the West seems to agree with me that she is wicked and Dorothy is good when she herself says "Oh, what a world! What a world! Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness?"

I expect you'll have a different interpretation of that, and I'm curious to see it. But I'm not going to argue about this any longer. Peace.

You're all analyzing the forces of evil too much. My beef with the movie was that WWW was presented as sole heir to the slippers and not having any direct issue with any of the others present. But she was blown off derisively, and my child mind with only the movie as evidence thought that even "the good guys" are total dicks.
Glinda does not come off well in the movie, AT ALL. Especially for dicking Dorothy around -- "Oh, you wouldn't have believed me!". Guess what, bitch? I'd have given it a shot anyway just for laughs, Really, it's Glinda who pisses me off - she's totally the villain in that movie.

To paraphrase Bruce...

'Good witch, bad witch... I'm the witch with the wand... '

ahem... anyway... yeah... MWM is cute, ok, we get it... then we go off on a discussion about the morality of dropping houses on people and stealing their shoes... people... I think we kinda lost track of what's really important...

like when are we going to see the pony girls next?

seriously... i just started watching FIM because of this comic... and now that I'm finally caught up, there's nary a pony girl to be seen!!!
