The shoulder spikes shown there at the top of page 6 of this thread would really on be a danger if they were to extend their arms upwards straight left and right. Going upwards with their hands directly in front of them would cause the shoulder pieces (with spikes) to roll towards their backs, not their heads. And I don't know about you, but I can't see much reason for them to extend a weapon straight left or right like that. Sure, that pose was used for ye olde days kind of firearm duel, but that kind of armor doesn't work vs guns anyways, and holding a crossbow like that is just unweildy.

Still, I can see your point in that the spikes wouldn't make much offensive difference (although they may trap a sword, I'd prefer to trap a sword much further away from my face), and would have been better placed on the elbows or knees.

If she would just get rid of that stupid vow about sleeping with any man who can best her in combat. . .

Nnno, she has a vow to sleep only with a man who can best her in combat, not every man who does. Beating her is not an automatic booty call, not to mention the only male I've seen beating her was an elder god. (Not of the tentacular persuasion!) And alas for you, Artemisia, she doesn't seem to be into girls. Or women.

I know, but Sonya tends to be somewhat prickly, and she isn't shy about expressing her displeasure in painful and often lethal ways...

Yep. . .and it's nigh on impossible to move in full plate armor. You can swing your sword, but parry? Deflect? forget it.

Well, someone who spent years training to fight in the stuff probably had a better chance of moving and, you know, really fighting in the stuff.

Not really. They had a better chance than someone off the street, but it was still pretty much the equivalent of being a tank. HArd to move, hard to maneuver, and mostly set up for horseback combat.

Actually, no. Unless you are talking about jousting armor, which was highly specialized (made to withstand a lance hit, and actually partially locked you in the jousting posture to reduce injury), plate armor was not that restrictive, if for no other reason that being highly restrictive would be fatal even with the protection. A man in properly fitted plate could do things like drop and roll and get to his feet with no problems and move his arms and such with nearly a full range of movement. Tales like what happened at Agincourt were caused more by factors like being trampled by fellow knights and their horses, and the suction effect of mud on wide, smooth areas of armor.

On the upside: until the invention of the crossbow, warriors in full armour were the toughest thing around.

Once the crossbow swung around, though, a warrior in full plate was a sitting duck.

EoL,

The Welsh Long Bow was far better at taking down knights in armor than crossbows were. At the battle of Agincourt, they had instances of long bow fired arrows doing through and throughs- through the armor, the knight, and the armor on the other side. There are records (possibly wrong) of a knight who got shot in the leg- it went through his leg armor, his leg, his leg armor, his saddle, his horse, his other leg's armor, his other leg, and stopped. The French, it should be noted, were using crossbows.

Raven,

Having worn some plate, even though you can maneuver in it, and even roll with a lot of training, it's still very heavy and very hard to fight in. A lot of times, knights were used for heavy shock to try and break the opponent's line. Most did not wield swords except as ceremonial weapons. They used axes or maces more often. Most axes had a spike at the back to break the armor.

Just to note, there is a difference between what many wore into battle and those full plate deals. For a long time, knights actually just wore a breast plate and a helmet and wore chain on their legs.

Robert E. Howard, who wrote the original stories, died in 1936. If he conceived Red Sonya as preferring women, her vow could easily be the only hint he would have put in the stories. If he had somehow made it clear that she was sexually attracted to women, the stories would have been considered obscene. (It's entirely possible that he actually didn't know that there are people who are attracted to others of the same gender.)
