This one is leaning towards the illegal, though. At least it is in the UK, dunno about wherever the comic is set.

And to people who go to a school to learn how to murder other people, "illegal" means what exactly?

Is anything that goes on at Artemis Academy "legal"? Most of the classes and traditions we have seen involve assault, and the whole staff could easily be arrested for Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.

Jacqui and Leanardo's tongue wrestling might technically be illegal, but at least no one is getting beaten up and everyone seems happy with the proceedings (so far).

One, the administration probably needs him. It's hard enough hiring experienced teachers these days as it is. Finding an experienced teacher who is also competent at magic isn't something you can just find on Craiglist.

Two, you'd have to prove he's actually guilty of a crime. In a very real way, he's not.

Third, there's probably some other set of rules and regulations you'd bring mages to rather than "the police," and you'd probably get into all sorts of trouble if you tried to bring down the law on the mages, potentially ruining or outing 'the system.'


Alternatively, one would think magic would solve a bunch of problems. It seems like the thing causing the problem (the ability to disguise a person as somebody else) would also be just the ticket to avoiding the police ("Mr. Delatorehhhhhh? Why no, that's not him, that's the school janitor/my friend Melissa/ a bundle of sticks!")

No. Delatorre is not happy with the proceedings; he's happy with what he thinks is happening. He thinks he's making out with April, the new assistant librarian. If he knew that this is Jacqui, he wouldn't go near her. He's being decieved, and that would be wrong, even if he wasn't her teacher.

Also, what happens when it turns out Mr. Delatoreeeeeh is our secret keeper? He was summoned to the principal's office when the Level 9 magical event took place, and it could be that he is their inside man. That would protect him from outside consequences, but cost him a lot within the organization. However, if he manages to see past the disguise on his own, he would end it then and there with no one the wiser.

It'll happen in a moment of *real* intimacy.

no, they are being trained to kill monsters, many of whom prey on humans to varying degrees. i still maintain that:

1) inter-species violence does not constitute murder, regardless of arbitrary/subjective concepts like sapience.
2) even if killing a member of another species could be considered murder, it is justified if that individual predates on humans or assists in the predation of others upon humans.
3) even discounting both of those points, the fact that human society is ignorant of the existence of said monsters suggests that they probably have no legal standing or protection under the law. as such, killing one would not be illegal, regardless of justification.

now while the academy's teaching methods are rather extreme, and may come into question with the authorities, students & parents have presumably signed wavers that cover most of what we've seen here.
